Can a song change the world? A group of Iraqis in Baghdad thinks so, and proves it with acts of kindness.
On World Humanitarian Day in 2012, American superstar Beyoncé performed her hit “I Was Here.” Five young Iraqis took note of the lyrics:
“I just want them to know
That I gave my all, did my best
Brought someone some happiness
Left this world a little better
Just because I was here”
By January 2013, the Iraqis had launched the “I Was Here” initiative, which provides humanitarian assistance and performs public service projects. Over 150 volunteers clean parks, collect and distribute aid to the needy and even revitalize historic buildings.
Volunteer groups like “I Was Here” help support a healthy civil society. U.S. and U.N. sponsored organizations support humanitarian and volunteer efforts worldwide.
How will you leave this world a little better?
