President Obama announced the launch of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) in Jamaica April 9. The program will award 250 fellowships each year to business and civil society leaders to develop joint initiatives with their counterparts in the United States.
YLAI hopes to generate $1 billion for emerging business and social entrepreneurs by the end of 2017 by helping fellows attract new investments and in-kind resources for their businesses or organizations each year.
Fellowship awardees will receive six weeks of training and immersion at an incubator, accelerator or civil society organization, and attend a summit in Washington to facilitate their mentoring, networking and investment opportunities.
In a manner similar to the young leader initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, young entrepreneurs and civil society leaders from the Western Hemisphere, including Cuba, will be able to sign up for email updates, social media platforms and local embassy groups to help with their networking efforts.
