Exploring Mars, the next frontier [poster]

Mars — the red planet — has long been the subject of speculation and science fiction.

But it’s not all fiction. NASA has a trove of science facts accumulated over decades. Robotic orbiters and landers, including robot geologists and rovers that survey the terrain, continuously send back data.

In 2020, NASA will send a new rover to Mars to seek signs of life on the planet. Scientists study soil samples, rocks and photographs. Why? Because scientists want to know if people can live on Mars. Or if there has been life on Mars.

The research also helps inform scientists about the evolution of our own planet and solar system. NASA technologies developed to explore Mars also are used to study similar geological conditions on Earth.
