Hurricane Harvey in pictures

Hurricane Harvey, which dumped some 50 inches of rainfall on southeast Texas, forced 44,000 people to flee to emergency shelters. In the midst of the catastrophe, volunteers and first responders — including police, firefighters and medical personnel — swung into action, rescuing people and livestock throughout the affected areas.

President Trump, paying tribute to the relief efforts of volunteers, said: “We’re one American family brought together in times of tragedy by the unbreakable bonds of love and loyalty that we have for one another. … Nowhere is our unity more evident than in the actions of our volunteer and charitable organizations that rally to their neighbors’ aid when disaster strikes.”

Following are images from the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, offering glimpses of devastation, resilience and everyday heroism.
