Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo is traveling in Europe October 1–6.
The secretary delivered keynote remarks at the U.S.–Holy See Symposium on Partnering with Faith-Based Organizations and had a private audience with Pope Francis. In Rome, the secretary met with Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, and Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio. He also visited Italy’s Abruzzo region to tour his ancestral home.
In Montenegro, Pompeo met with President Milo Đukanović. In North Macedonia the secretary and Prime Minister Zoran Zaev marked the 25th anniversary of full diplomatic relations between the two countries. On the secretary’s final stop, in Athens, Greece, he met with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and Defense Minister Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos.
