October 23 is International Snow Leopard Day

Snow leopards need our help.

The legendary cats’ numbers are dwindling, because of poaching and competition with humans. There are only a few thousand roaming from Uzbekistan to Mongolia and Western China.

The U.S. is working to conserve the endangered snow leopard. A U.S. Agency for International Development and World Wildlife Fund initiative — called Conservation and Adaptation in Asia’s High Mountain Landscapes and Communities — protects snow leopards and their habitats.

The 12 nations with wild snow leopards met in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in August 2017 to reaffirm their commitment to protecting snow leopards and their mountain homes.

Celebrate this elusive feline October 23, International Snow Leopard Day.
