Fish and other wildlife need safe havens to thrive. Right now, only about 3 percent of the world’s ocean is set aside in marine protected areas.
But that figure’s on the rise. President Obama on August 26 expanded the protected area at Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument off Hawaii. It’s now the world’s largest, but hardly the only one. At the past two Our Ocean conferences, world leaders committed to protect waters almost the size of Australia.
What’s next in marine conservation? Stay tuned. You can follow the September 15–16 Our Ocean conference at #OurOcean and StateDeptOES.
