Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to furthering relations with Russia when he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Sochi, Russia, on May 14.
The secretary referred to “frank discussions” in speaking of the purpose of his trip. The leaders discussed global challenges, including events in Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, North Korea and Iran.
Pompeo said that he and Putin had productive conversations, noting that the two countries have worked together on counterterrorism efforts. “There are truly overlapping interests that we can build on,” the secretary said. “We can work together to make each of our two peoples more successful and, frankly, the world more successful too.”
