U.S. ‘ready to assist’ Iranian flood victims

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo offered condolences on behalf of the American people to the victims of the recent floods in Iran, where nearly 60 people have died in the past several weeks.

Pompeo said the U.S. “stands ready to assist and contribute” to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which would then direct the money through the Iranian Red Crescent for relief.

“The regime blames outside entities when, in fact, it is their mismanagement that has led to this disaster,” the secretary said.

For decades, government mismanagement of water resources has led to devastating effects throughout Iran, U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook said in a recent message to Iran on water management.

“They even jail environmentalists for attempting to help Iran prepare for these very issues,” Pompeo said.
