U.S. sanctions Venezuela’s national development bank [video]

The United States has sanctioned Venezuela’s national development bank and four subsidiaries following the unlawful detention of interim President Juan Guaidó’s chief of staff by security forces loyal to Nicolás Maduro.

The bank, Banco de Desarrollo Económico y Social de Venezuela (BANDES), was established to promote economic development in Venezuela, but Maduro and his loyalists have exploited the institution to enrich themselves and attempt to hold onto power.

The United States demands the immediate release of Guaidó’s aide, Roberto Marrero, and will continue to hold Maduro and his accomplices accountable for the abuse of Venezuelans who support the interim president.
