Mihrigul Tursun, a young Uyghur mother, was detained and tortured by the Chinese authorities when she returned home to Xinjiang, China, with her children.
Her terrifying ordeal is not unique. The Chinese government is currently persecuting millions of Uyghurs and holding between 800,000 and possibly 2 million in internment camps.
The Uyghurs are a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority who live in China’s northwest province of Xinjiang. Over the past few years, China has stepped up its systematic repression of Muslim and Uyghur life.
