Venezuelan journalists describe persecution [video]

Journalists Manuel Barroeta and Gerybel Torres, a married couple, fled Venezuela with their children in April 2018 after facing threats to their family and the closure of the media office where they worked.

“It was getting more and more dangerous to live in Venezuela, because of that persecution,” Barroeta said. “We are both victims of it.”

Although they feel safer in Ecuador, where they now live, Barroeta and Torres hope to return home one day.

“The truth is any migrant will tell you that their heart’s desire is to return to Venezuela,” Torres said.

“We want to see everyone that left the country, like we did, reunited once again,” Barroeta said, and “we can raise our children in freedom.”
