Vice President Pence outlined plans for the creation of a U.S. Space Force, a sixth branch of the U.S. military.
“Just as in the past — when we created the Air Force — establishing the Space Force is an idea whose time has come,” Pence said August 9 at the Pentagon.
U.S. satellites crucial to global navigation and communication are increasingly under threat. New technologies could allow adversaries to disrupt these systems — not just for the United States, but for the planet.
“America will always seek peace, in space as on the Earth. But history proves that peace only comes through strength. And in the realm of outer space, the United States Space Force will be that strength in the years ahead,” Pence said. He leads the National Space Council, which aims to build American leadership in space.
