It’s not every day that the president of the United States mentions you in a speech. But that’s what happened to Ibtihaj Muhammad when President Obama visited a mosque in Baltimore.
“By the way, when Team USA marches into the next Olympics, one of the Americans waving the red, white and blue will be a fencing champion wearing her hijab,” Obama said. “That’s right! Ibtihaj Muhammad, who is here today, stand up.”
Muhammad is the first member of America’s diverse Muslim community to compete in hijab at the Olympic Games. This summer she hopes to bring back a gold medal for her country at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
