U.S. will end exemptions to sanctions on Iranian oil importers [video]

The United States will no longer provide any exemptions from sanctions on countries that buy Iranian oil, administration officials announced April 22.

“With this decision today, we expect to see more positive impacts to deny Iran the revenue it needs to conduct its foreign policy,” U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook said.

“Our hopes are for a better life” for the people of Iran, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, and for “all people afflicted by the regime’s violence and destruction.”

The current exemptions, known formally as significant reduction exceptions, will end on May 2.
