10月27日，美国国务卿迈克尔·蓬佩奥（Michael R. Pompeo）为纪念国际宗教自由日（International Religious Freedom Day）发表声明指出，“我们不会在人们因个人信仰受到杀害、监禁、骚扰和酷刑之时袖手旁观。我们坚决支持和维护践行自己的信仰的人们。”
1998年通过的国际宗教自由法案（International Religious Freedom Act）要求美国对外政策以促进世界各地的宗教自由为一个重要的核心。今年恰逢该法案通过21周年。
